Redesigning the New York City subway map
Maps are one of the most basic data visualizations that we have; we’ve been making them for millennia. But we still haven’t perfected them as a tool for understanding complex systems — and with 26 lines and 468 stations across five boroughs, the New York City subway system certainly is complex. The KickMap is the result of my quest to design a more effective subway map, and ultimately to encourage increased ridership.

Free Public Wi-Fi Almost Everywhere in New York for Cablevision, Comcast, and Time Warner Customers
soupsoup:
Think about that for a second… as long as you are a Cablevision, Time Warner, or Comcast customer, you can get free Wi-Fi access at practically limitless locations (thousands) all across the NY metro area from all three providers, and connect to any of their networks from your computer, iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry — whatever.
Now all they need to do is add Wi-Fi on the subways and I’ll never go disconnected!

The Latest NYC Bar Trend: ChatRoulette Parties
Sarah Egan, one of the Union Hall redheads, had never heard of or played ChatRoulette until last night, but she felt similarly energized at having an audience behind her. Once seated at the computer she became a witty comedian, prodding and teasing strangers for the crowd’s delight. She was the most successful hostess of the night. “I prefer this to karaoke,” she said. “Singing to people never worked for me, but making fun of people at a rapid pace is very entertaining. I think this is going to become a huge thing.

Played “team chess” last night at Fat Cat. The rules: 2-person teams alternate taking turns for their side without talking or strategizing about the game. Incredibly challenging since you’re only good if you’re in sync with your partners’ moves too.

"I don’t know what it means to be a New Yorker anymore. I guess if you work for a giant corporation and you’ve lived here for more than six weeks, you’re a New Yorker now. I think I used to know what it meant to be a New Yorker. I guess if you don’t eat at Cosi sandwich shop you’re a real New Yorker. If you don’t go to Hopstop.com to find your way around the city, you’re a real New Yorker. If you make too much noise on the sidewalk at night and bother people living in overpriced apartments, you’re a real New Yorker. If you get mugged, and then immediately go eat a slice with the money hidden in your sock that they did not steal from you, you’re a real New Yorker. If you cross the street wherever and whenever you want, you’re a New Yorker. And if you walk fast, you’re a New Yorker. Nobody walks fast in this city anymore. Everyone walks slow, and then goes to Equinox."

I’m back tumblas!
After a new years reunion in Cambridge, family cruise to Mexico, and meetings for work in Chicago, it feels GREAT to be back in NYC.
I missed it all. You all. Roomies, friends, coworkers. Papaya Dog. The convenience of taxis. The lateness of bars. The price of drinks (jk, not that).
Anyway, boy does it feel good to be back :)
