Because I was in class when I got the clue, I just barely missed out.

After my 2-3:15 class, I walked out onto the Tisch Hall plaza (NYU’s version of a “quad” where students congregate). Anyway, it took a second or two before I noticed, but the students that were out on the plaza were… strange. Let me explain: 1) Many of them I didn’t recognize. 2) They were standing alone and distant from each other. And 3) They weren’t talking, just standing awkwardly.

To write it here, doesn’t fully capture how strange it looked. I thought it was a flash mob that was going to do an ImprovEverywhere-kind of performance. But after I had left to grab my lunch, everything was back to normal and there was no big applause or explanation of what it was.

To say the least, I’m confused and want answers.

I have a theory...

Look at your Facebook News Feed.
Then there are people you have had absolutely no interaction with. Ever. They friended you years ago and you haven’t wrote, messaged, invited, tagged, or poked them during your entire relationship on Facebook. But there they are in your News Feed in the TOP NEWS section.

Once seated at the computer she became a witty comedian, prodding and teasing strangers for the crowd’s delight. She was the most successful hostess of the night. “I prefer this to karaoke,” she said. “Singing to people never worked for me, but making fun of people at a rapid pace is very entertaining. The founder works themselves into a stupor and at some point they go through what is often a difficult transition where they “step back” from the business and employ others to take over their various jobs. Many businesses don’t make this transition and it is the subject of much discussion in MBA programs world-wide.

Humans naturally sleep twice or more in 24 hours, and napping fits that pattern. In a study of 39 subjects, half took a 90-minute nap at 2pm while the rest stayed awake. The groups performed comparably on a test administered at noon, but the nappers significantly outscored the non-nappers on a 6pm exam. Next up: determining the link between changing sleep patterns related to age and the concurrent drop in the ability to absorb new information.

AD SALES TIP: Chicago agencies LOVE this restaurant.

AD SALES TIP: Chicago agencies LOVE this restaurant.

"I don’t know what it means to be a New Yorker anymore. I guess if you work for a giant corporation and you’ve lived here for more than six weeks, you’re a New Yorker now. I think I used to know what it meant to be a New Yorker. I guess if you don’t eat at Cosi sandwich shop you’re a real New Yorker. If you don’t go to Hopstop.com to find your way around the city, you’re a real New Yorker. If you make too much noise on the sidewalk at night and bother people living in overpriced apartments, you’re a real New Yorker. If you get mugged, and then immediately go eat a slice with the money hidden in your sock that they did not steal from you, you’re a real New Yorker. If you cross the street wherever and whenever you want, you’re a New Yorker. And if you walk fast, you’re a New Yorker. Nobody walks fast in this city anymore.
