Advertising is the tax you pay for being unremarkable.
– Robert Stephens, founder of GeekSquad
I have had the good fortune of spending some time with Robert. Almost every sentence he says is worthy of quoting. He really is one amazing entrepreneur.

They should call us Generation L for "Lucky"
I can’t help but think we live in pretty lucky times.
We’re the generation that’s growing up with the internet. We have access to music, movies, TV shows, and articles — all through the ease and accessibility of the internet. But the best part: many of us pay almost nothing for this content.
We’re the generation that’s scoring free tunes through file-sharing...
Kids are spending more time with media than you →
A study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that kids 8-18 are spending upwards of 11 hours’ worth of media content per day. And that’s not including time spent talking on the phone (half an hour) or sending text messages (an hour and a half).
Director of the Center on Media and Child Health and Boston pediatrician Dr. Michael Rich pointed to the ubiquity of media usage as an...
Apple in Talks With Microsoft to Switch iPhones to... →
In a sign of just how tense Apple’s rivalry with Google has gotten, the software giant is in talks with archrival Microsoft to make Bing the primary search engine on the iPhone. The negotiations have been underway for weeks, sources tell Businessweek. “Apple and Google know the other is their primary enemy,” says an anonymous Apple insider. “Microsoft is now a pawn in that battle.”
Google is...

Finally! A Sarcasm-Specific Punctuation Mark →
Sarcastic people around the world, rejoice—a father-son team has finally developed a punctuation mark purpose-built to make sarcasm clear in written and electronic communication. “Questions have the question mark, exclamations have the exclamation point,” reasons the elder creator. The SarcMark is “the 21st century’s punctuation.” Newser will be punting on using it, however: We’re not so...

Late Night Mess is Our Fault
It’s fun to point fingers, but the “late-night fratricide” at NBC isn’t Jeff Zucker’s fault, Leno’s, or Conan’s: It’s ours. The real culprit is our own disaffection with traditional TV, writes David Carr, who’s been following the fracas closely—on his computer. We’re so bombarded by news that The Tonight Show and its ilk increasingly seem beside the...

TV show product placement up 84% in the last year →
In a recent episode of the NBC series Medium, writers had to work the movie Memoirs of a Geisha into the dialogue three times because of a deal the network made with Sony earlier in the season. They even had the characters go on a date to an early screening of the movie and bump into friends who had just viewed Geisha to tell them how good it was.
Another product placement intruded a touching...

Would you like Wi-Fi with your french fries? →
Starting today, fast-food restaurant McDonald’s will begin offering free Wi-Fi access at 11,500 of its 14,000 U.S. locations. It’s a nice improvement from the $2.95 they were previously charging for two hours, and it could come in pretty handy in a pinch, considering the ubiquity of McDonald’s.

I'm back tumblas!
After a new years reunion in Cambridge, family cruise to Mexico, and meetings for work in Chicago, it feels GREAT to be back in NYC.
I missed it all. You all. Roomies, friends, coworkers. Papaya Dog. The convenience of taxis. The lateness of bars. The price of drinks (jk, not that).
Anyway, boy does it feel good to be back :)

The 10 Best Restaurants For Business Meetings In... →
evangotlib:
This list seems very 1997 - 2003. These are restaurants I took clients to years ago. Michael’s is SO cliche. The only one I agree with is the Modern. And Gotham (perhaps my favorite NYC eatery) is NOT a lunch spot. Much more of a dinner spot.
Restaurants? Real business happens in bars.

You are who you follow
There’s a saying that goes, “You are who your friends are.” I’ve always believed this to be true. I constantly feel the influence my circle of friends hold over me — they shape where I go, what I do, what I wear, what I eat, what I like, and so on. Obviously, they don’t have complete influence over me (I’m not some PSA for peer pressure), but it would be...

Don't Be A Hero →
hypertexty:
By all means, love what you do. Work hard. Get involved. But recognize when your level of involvement is actually doing harm. If you’re playing the hero, or if you have a hero on your team, it’s probably time for a serious talk with your coworkers and manager.
Alex Payne’s carefully reasoned argument against the heroic all-nighter-pulling employee and their toxicity in teams.

New year, new tumblr theme.
As part of my resolution to lessen and focus, I redesigned my tumblr page keithisablog.com to be more simple and readable. I plan to add tabs near the top that link to my key skills (marketing, web design, and piano).
